IN 1989, THE FAMILY SUPPORT CENTRE (FSC) IN HAY RIVER, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES BEGAN AS THE WOMEN’S SHELTER:

A network of women in the community opened their homes to provide a safe place for women experiencing family violence. In 1992, we merged our network of safe homes into a five-bedroom centralized shelter, providing safe, emergency shelter for women and children escaping violent family situations and homelessness.

We provide support to families in Hay River and surrounding areas to help them develop violence-free, healthy lifestyles, including the following services:

- Emergency shelter for women and their children

- Children Who Witness Abuse program

- Community support and referral services

- Transitional Extended Stay program to combat homelessness

The Family Support Centre would like to acknowledge and thank the many partners who have provided, and continue to provide, collaboration and support to the organization. These include municipal, territorial and federal elected officials and leaders, First Nations organizations, partners in the Shelter Network, local service clubs and organizations, the RCMP, service contractors, volunteers and patrons. It would be impossible to name all the individuals who have assisted the Family Support Centre. We trust you know who you are and how much your support has meant to the organization.

We look forward to your on-going partnership, and that of others, in our continuing effort to provide support and assistance to families in crisis.
